A reference implementation of Spotify's platform engineering approach using Backstage (now CNCF project). The developer portal provides a unified interface for service catalog, documentation (TechDocs), and deployment. Golden Path templates reduce new service setup from weeks to minutes. Backstage plugins integrate with Kubernetes, CI/CD, and monitoring tools.
With 2000+ engineers and 3000+ services, Spotify faced "microservice sprawl" — inconsistent tooling, duplicated effort, poor discoverability. New services took weeks to set up. Documentation was scattered across wikis, repos, and Slack threads. No single pane of glass for service health.
Built Backstage as an open-source developer portal (now CNCF project). Service Catalog provides a searchable registry of all services with ownership, dependencies, and health status. TechDocs renders documentation from code repos (docs-as-code). Golden Path templates provide opinionated, pre-configured scaffolding for new services. Backstage plugins integrate with Kubernetes, ArgoCD, PagerDuty, and Grafana. The platform reduced new service setup from weeks to 15 minutes.
